In this post I will talk about doing a broad or a narrow shoulder adjustment to the Bessie Top. Broad shoulder adjustment is another very common adjustment for me. In fact, I did in for all my Bessie tops.
How do you know if you need one? If you are not constricted in the upper back are when you are wearing your Bessie top, but the shoulder is just not lying quite nicely. In fact, it seems it needs to be pushed out just a little bit. This is when you could do a simple broad shoulder adjustment.
If when you are wearing your Bessie top the shoulder just seems to be too far out and there are some drag lines happening right around the shoulder point, you may need a narrow shoulder adjustment. In this case, I recommend pinning some excess fabric out to see if it will make a difference and to calculate how much you need to take out.
However, if you are constricted in the upper back area, or there is just too much excess fabric, you likely need a broad or narrow back adjustment.
You will need:

- Back sleeve pattern piece
- Front sleeve pattern piece
- Scrap paper
- Tape
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Pen or pencil
BROAD SHOULDER ADJUSTMENT STEPS:
Place a piece of scrap paper underneath the front sleeve pattern piece. Rotate the pattern piece until you can see the curve of the shoulder on the raglan seam.
Tape the pattern piece down. Move the shoulder out the necessary amount. Redraw a new shoulder curve.
Repeat for the back sleeve pattern and true the shoulder seams on sleeve front and back pieces.
NARROW SHOULDER ADJUSTMENT STEPS:
Rotate the front pattern piece until you can see the curve of the shoulder on the raglan seam.
Move the shoulder line in the necessary amount. Redraw a new shoulder curve.
Repeat for the back sleeve pattern and true the shoulder seams on sleeve front and back pieces.
That’s it! The broad/narrow shoulder adjustment is super easy on the Bessie pattern.
Let me know if you have any questions!

Anya
