Look, my coatigan is making another appearance! Well actually, this blog post is all about those pants you can barely see in this photo. I have been cautiously considering the cropped wide pants trend since last spring. I did not think it was for me though. It seemed too fashion forward and I didn’t know if I could pull it off. Well, this Fall I decided I need to give the cropped wide pants a try. I wanted a them to be quick to put together and easy to wear, just in case I didn’t like the style on me. And what better pattern to use than True Bias’ Emerson Pants?
I made Emerson Pants a few times before. I have 3 pairs of Emerson shorts, most of which are unblogged. I also made Emerson Pants into long wide trousers here by lengthening the pattern. So I knew the fit of the pattern really well and I knew I would have no issues putting the pants together.
However, I wanted to make the pants slightly narrower. To do so, I took them in throughout the leg so that my final leg opening was 20″. I also eliminated one of the darts by following Megan Nielsen’s tutorial. Finally, I added 1″ to the crotch length as I wanted the pants to sit a little higher on my waist.
From there I made my usual adjustments to the pattern to accommodate my behind – I scooped the crotch seam out and lengthened the crotch seam at the inseam on the back pant piece. I am pretty happy with the fit in the back now, even though I think I could add another 1/4″ to the length of my seat.
The pants are made out of lightweight wool suiting I got from Gorgeous Fabrics. Even though the wool feels really nice on the skin and does not seem scratchy at all, I decided to underline the pants to 3″ below the knee with bemberg lining. Because of it the fabric lies really nicely, it does not show any lines and the knees do not stretch out as much. It is great! I am tempted to underline all my wool pants from now on.
I also pressed creases into the pants. I have really been digging creased pants lately. Despite being a dressy wool pant these babies are comfy! I mean, they ARE secret pyjamas with being a pull on pant with elastic back. But because of the dressiness of the wool, no one knows it but me. It’s pretty great.
After making these pants I think the whole wide cropped pant thing is growing on me… I may have to make a few more in other pattern styles and colours.
What is your take on this trend?
Love,
Anya
I think you’ve got the leg width nigh on perfect. You’ve hit magic with a pant that’s as comfy as PJs but actually look classy!
Thank you! I did a lot of “research” online when looking at wide leg pants lol I love it when high end retailers let you know the length and width of the pant. It is useful in so many ways! Elastic waist on the pants, at least part elastic, is the way to go. So comfy…
Ahhhhh now that’s wise research!!!
These look great!
Thank you!
What a clever pair of sercret pyjamas that are also boardroom ready! Clever you! Lined wool pants sound scrumptious, too!
Thank you! That’s exactly what I was going for and the best part is that no one will know… haha I am actually surprised with how much I liked lined pants. They feel silky and barely stretch out.
So gorgeous Anna. Perfect width and length. I’m so picky about pant lengths and yours are perfectly meeting the top of your ankle boots…
The fabric sounds divine to wear too.
Thank you! I am with you. Its so hard to find just the right length especially if you are not a standard height. I did some “research” online for various pant widths at a few high end retailers 🙂 That helped narrow down the width I liked. And with length, I actually measured it right down to the top of this particular boot! Being able to sew and alter things really helps!
They look great! A perfect outfit, actually. I like this trend quite a bit, although I haven’t made any for myself. There are only so many sewing hours in a day/week/month! nice job with the lining, I’m sure they will stay in good shape for ages, and feel less like pyjamas… although that sounds pretty great, too.
Thank you! I agree, it’s so hard not to want to sew all the things, but as you said there are only so many hours in the day and then some of those hours you actually have to wear all the other things you’ve already made… I really hope these pants last for a while! Especially with them being lined, hopefully that extends their life a bit.
